WHO Director-General issues urgent appeal from Sudan
World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said he was saddened and increasingly saddened that the humanitarian crisis in Sudan was not receiving sufficient attention from the international community, launching an urgent appeal to mobilize more resources to address the crisis.
Ghebreyesus stressed in a press conference held in Port Sudan that more than half of the country’s population is facing the risk of famine and natural disasters, which could lead to the collapse of infrastructure and the spread of epidemics such as cholera, malaria, measles and monkeypox.
He also pointed out that a significant number of women were subjected to sexual violence, as a result of the armed conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces .
He said that despite the early warning by the World Health Organization and its partners that the crisis in Sudan would lead to many risks, there is a lack of attention, as if the international community has forgotten or ignored the collapse of the health system in the country that this crisis is leading to.
He added that his visit to Sudan comes as a result of these considerations, and in order to launch an appeal to mobilize more resources to confront this crisis.
Since April 2023, Sudan has been witnessing a raging war between the army led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces led by his former deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.
