UNICEF is setting up new children’s platforms to mark International Children’s Day

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) held soccer competitions between boys and girls as part of its celebration of World Children’s Day in Khartoum.

Ms. Mandeep O’Brien of UNICEF in Sudan said that World Children’s Day is a special day for children, a day when we all stop to listen to children and provide them with platforms to express their concerns and share solutions to the challenges they face.

World Children’s Day marked the signing of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which clarified who children were, all their rights and Governments’ responsibilities to children.

“This year’s celebration of International Children’s Day, which is officially celebrated on November 20, coincides with the beginning of the World Cup, creating a unique opportunity to use the power of football in the Federation and reminding us that there can only be one team when it comes to children’s rights.

Through sport, she called on UNICEF to make no distinction between children and integration regardless of who they were and where they came from.

She also called for sport for all children – girls, boys, children with special needs, children in school and out of school “- and said it was an opportunity to participate meaningfully and bring them together.”

Since 1990, International Children’s Day has been celebrated as the anniversary of the adoption by the United Nations General Assembly of the Declaration on the Rights of the Child and the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
