UN Under-Secretary-General warns of protracted conflict in Sudan
UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths has warned that the protracted conflict in Sudan could push the entire region into a “humanitarian catastrophe”.
The war in Sudan is “fueling a humanitarian emergency of massive proportions, as this bitter conflict and its ensuing hunger, disease and displacement now threaten to engulf the entire country,”
Griffiths, the Emergency Relief Coordinator, said in a statement.
“The longer the fighting continues, the more devastating its impact,” he said, noting that “food is already running out in some areas,” and “hundreds of thousands of children are suffering from acute malnutrition, and they face imminent risk of death if left untreated.”
