World Health Organization reports shocking news about the situation in Sudan

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 70% of health facilities in Sudan’s conflict areas are not functioning.

The United Nations World Food Programme has warned that hundreds of thousands of refugees from southern Sudan returning to their country to escape war in Sudan face “emergency hunger” with 90 percent of households left for days without meals while crossing border areas.

Ms. Mary McGruarty, Director of the World Food Programme in Juba, told today’s conference that “we see families moving from one disaster to another as they flee the danger in the Sudan to find despair in South Sudan.”

Since the outbreak of fighting in the Sudan, some 7,500 people have been killed, according to a census by the NGO Acklade.

The multiple armistice agreements failed to end the violence that led tens of thousands to flee across Sudan’s borders and raised fears of a humanitarian crisis sweeping the wider region.

The World Food Programme (WFP) said that South Sudanese citizens who make up almost all refugees arriving in their country “return to a State that already faces unprecedented humanitarian needs.”

“People arriving today are in more serious circumstances than those of families who fled in the first weeks of the conflict.”
