League of Arab States approves Sudan’s food security initiative
The General Secretariat of the League of Arab States approved the Sudan’s Food Security Initiative during the meeting of the special session of the Economic and Social Council held at the headquarters of the Arab League in Cairo.
This was announced to Sudan Scoop by the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Dr. Abubakar Omar Al-Bashri, after his return from the meeting, through which the Sudanese delegation participated in those meetings, which he described as successful.
The Minister noted that his Ministry had launched an urgent project to support the cultivation of 1 million acres of wheat in the winter season, with a separate revolving fund to meet the season’s inputs.
The General Secretariat of the Arab League promised an urgent contribution of $ 500 thousand to the Fund. The Arab Authority promised the same amount and the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development donated $ 200 thousand as an initial payment.
In the same vein, the World Bank has donated $1 million to support food security projects.
The Minister said that the meeting had adopted the election of the Bureau of the twentyninth session of the Committee on Agriculture. Canada had been elected Chairperson of the Committee on Agriculture and the following countries as members of the Bureau of the Committee. The Sudan had been elected as representative of the Near East and North Africa and Australia of the South-West Pacific and Brazilian States.
