Due to the violence, 6 million Sudanese are at risk of being famished
Alain Otara, Deputy Head of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Sudan, warned that more than 6 million Sudanese are one step away from famine.
Otara described the general situation in Sudan as catastrophic, noting that hundreds of children there are at risk of losing their lives due to the lack of vaccines.
The United Nations reported last week that more than 1,200 children had died due to suspected measles and malnutrition in displaced camps in White Nile State, while cholera, dengue fever and malaria pose a threat throughout the country.
Since mid-April, fighting has been taking place between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, and the battles have left more than 5,000 dead, and more than 5 million displaced and refugees, inside and outside one of the poorest countries in the world, according to the United Nations.
