NCHR Stresses Importance of Respecting and Ensuring Right of Expression
The National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR ) has issued a press release on the calls by some groups for the closure of cities in East Sudan and Khartoum.
The NCHR emphasized the importance of respecting and ensuring the right to freedom of expression and the right to peaceful assembly as guaranteed by the constitutional document and international and regional treaties ratified by the state.
The NCHR called on authorities to take all measures to prevent such forms of protest in accordance with the principle of balance of interests, saying if the right to peaceful assembly is one of the rights guaranteed in accordance with the constitutional document and relevant international and regional treaties, the exercise of this right by people should not conflict with the right to freedom of movement and other associated rights, including the right to food and the right to health.
The National Commission for Human Rights earlier restricted the serious consequences of the closure of the eastern Sudan highway, including the scarcity of life-saving medicines and the scarcity of some food commodities.
The Commission referred the appearance of the hate speech and incitement to violence, a matter which obliges the authorities to take all measures against anyone found to be involved in hate speech and violence.
