Sudan and Iran Reestablish Diplomatic Relations After a 7-Year Rift

Iranian news agency “IRNA” reported today that Iranian Foreign Minister Hussein Amir Abdollahian met with Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Sadig Ali for the first time since diplomatic relations were severed between the two countries seven years ago.

The agency stated that the meeting, which took place in the Azerbaijani capital Baku, aimed to resolve misunderstandings between the two countries and enhance political and economic relations between Tehran and Khartoum.

Sudan severed diplomatic relations with Iran in 2016 after the Saudi embassy in Tehran was stormed. Saudi Arabia and Iran agreed to resume relations in March, mediated by China, raising expectations for the full restoration of diplomatic relations between Tehran and other Arab countries.

This development has been welcomed by the majority of journalists, media activists, and opinion leaders.
