United Nations Human Rights Council adopts resolution on Sudan
On Thursday, the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva adopted a procedural consensus resolution to provide the High Commissioner with an oral update on the human rights situation in the Sudan in March, to be followed by an interactive dialogue session, and to submit a written report next June, followed by an interactive dialogue session with the participation of the expert-designate Adama Deng.
The Council responded to Sudan’s requests to recognize the positive steps taken by the Government.
The draft resolution included the deletion of the phrase “military takeover” and recognition of the need to terminate the mandate of the appointed expert once the civilian Government had been appointed, thereby leaving the Sudan on the Council’s agenda.
