The Under-Secretary of State addresses the high-level meeting of the IOM Council
The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dafallah El Hadj Ali Osman, Geneva, addressed the high-level meeting of the Council of the International Organization for Migration entitled “The intersection between climate change and food security, migration and displacement”.
His Excellency said that the Sudan, as a first and foremost migrant crossing State and a source of destination, remained active and active in all regional and international forums aimed at addressing the problems of unregulated migration and the negative effects of climate change. The Sudan, as the current President of IGAD, was leading a number of efforts aimed at strengthening the capacity of the States of the region to meet the challenges posed by climate change and its negative effects, including the displacement of many peoples and inhabitants of the region.
He noted that this issue will be present during the Conference of Foreign Ministers of IGAD, which will be hosted by Khartoum tomorrow, 30 November 2022.
In his statement, Mr. Undersecretary of State noted that the participation of General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, in the meetings of the States members of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 27), held recently in Sharm el-Sheikh, The Arab Republic of Egypt reflected the Sudan’s interest in climate change and its readiness to implement regional and international initiatives aimed at strengthening joint efforts to overcome current global challenges, notably climate change, food insecurity and displacement.
He appealed to the international community to support capacity-building, including logistical and technical assistance, to address the phenomenon of unregulated migration and the negative impact of climate change based on the principle of shared responsibility.
