Security Council Issues press statement welcoming signing of Sudan’s Political Framework Agreement
United Nations Security Council (UNSC), issued a press statement welcoming the signing of the Sudan Political Framework Agreement on 5th December 2022 , and commending the facilitation role of the Trilateral Mechanism of the United Nations, the AfricanUnion, and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).
The UNSC press statement pointed out that the Security Council welcomes the signing of the Sudan Political Framework Agreement, signed on the 5 th of current December, underscoring that was an essential step toward the formation of a cvillian-led government and defining constitutional arrangaements to guide Sudan through a transitional period culminated by elections.
The members of the UNSC commended the trilateral mechanism of the United Nations Integreated Transiton Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMIS), African Union, and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), in supporting Sudanese efforts to restore a lasting, iunclusive and democratic political settlement in Sudan.
The members of UNSC welcomed in the statement the efforts of signatories to the political framework agreement to gain the support of a broad range of Sudanese actors, stressing the importance of establishing a conducive environment for resolving outstanding issues through a peaceful and inclusive dialogue.
They stressed the need for continues confidence building measures and strongly encouraged key political forces that have not yet signed the agreement to join the political process, emphasizing the importance of providing them with further opportunities to do so.
The members of the UNSC encouraged the parties to start work without delay on the second phase of process, and to address the critical issues envisaged by the signatories to the Political Framework Agreement that foster the Sudan’s peace and security, and to ensure the women participation as included in the agreement.
They called on all the Sudanese stakeholders to continue work with the Trilateral Mechanism on the second phase of the consultations to achieve the objectives of the transition.
The members of the council undersocored the importance of unlocking the resumption of economic assistance, and the concerted efforts to finalize the negotiations to reach agreement on the formation of a civilian-led transitional government to address Sudan’s urgent humanitarian and economic challenges.
The members of the Security Council reaffirmed in the press statement their strong commitment to the unity, sovereigngty, independence, and territorial integrity of the Republic of Sudan.
