Al-Burhan: Peace and security are the cornerstones of prosperity and development in the region
The President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, current Chairman of IQAD, General Abdul Fatah al-Burhan, said that the existence and meeting of IQAD leaders as a single family underscores the common interest in different situations and their desire not only to solve problems but to seek a promising future for the peoples of the region.
During his address today, he explained the opening session of the Emergency Igad Summit, which began its work in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi With the participation of the leaders of the States and Governments Members of the Organization, the Sudan, as the current Chairman of the Organization, has organized the work of the Summit in order to achieve mutual benefit for all Member States, noting that despite the challenges that remain, we continue to assume this great responsibility on behalf of all the region’s citizens.
He pointed out that there are a range of internal and external challenges and difficulties that must be focused on drought and disaster issues, as well as issues that touch peace and security, calling for concerted efforts, cooperation and joint coordination in order to find urgent solutions.Proof of the need to mitigate the effects of the coronavirus pandemic and find durable solutions to the problem of food security in the countries of the region by leveraging the resources of many of the organization’s member states.General Al-Barhan added that peace and security are the cornerstones of prosperity, development and regional integration, stating that conflicts pose the region’s greatest threats to terrorism, extremism, human trafficking and the proliferation of illicit weapons.
The current President of IGAD confirmed that IGAD had succeeded in building a reputation recognized as having experience in conflict prevention and conflict resolution.
Al-Barhan called on the IGAD leaders to work on the detailed reporting of the secretariat’s issues and to discuss them in the best way that would lead to the most successful options and alternatives for root solutions to the challenges ahead.
President Al-Burhan called on the international community to redouble its assistance to IGAD’s efforts to build peace, stability, security, regional integration and humanitarian cooperation.
