A new Ethiopian ambassador to Cairo after a year of “suspension”
President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has adopted the papers of Ethiopia’s new ambassador to Egypt, the Egyptian Presidency said.
“Sisi adopted the papers of the new Ethiopian Ambassador Hassan Ibrahim Musa at a ceremony on Saturday.”
The Ethiopian Ambassador’s accreditation was part of the procedure for accepting the papers of a number of new ambassadors accredited to Cairo.
Addis Ababa had decided to withdraw its ambassador earlier in order to reduce expenditures in the light of Ethiopia’s crunch economic crisis. The move was then a major shock as Ethiopia’s ambassador to Egypt is important in the light of the exchange of letters between Cairo and Addis Ababa regarding the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, which is built on the waters of the Blue NNile.
Ethiopia refuses to conclude any legal agreements on the filling and operation of the dam with the downstream States of Egypt and the Sudan.
The spokesperson for the Presidency stated that Mr. President welcomed the new ambassadors in Cairo and wished the ambassadors well in their duties.
The President stressed Egypt’s desire to strengthen the framework of bilateral relations with their States in all areas and stressed the need for continued communication and coordination on various regional and international issues of common interest.
