Minister for Foreign Affairs receives the High Commissioner for Human Rights
The Minister for Foreign Affairs in charge, Ambassador Ali Sadik Ali, received at his office the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mr. Volker Türk, and his delegation.
The Minister extended congratulations to the High Commissioner on his election to the post, affirming the Sudan’s cooperation with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) as an active member of the Human Rights Council and reaffirming its sovereignty over the Sudan’s adherence to international human rights laws and treaties.
Noting the significant developments in the field of human rights in the Sudan in aspects of legislation, the signing of the Juba Peace Agreement and several related measures, as well as the Sudan’s reception of a large number of refugees from neighbouring countries despite the economic difficulties faced, which underscores the Transitional Government’s interest in human rights.
For his part, the High Commissioner appreciated the role of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in facilitating his visit to the country and supporting his mission to the Sudan. He also thanked the United Nations and appreciated the Government of the Sudan’s considerable efforts to receive refugees.
Noting OHCHR’s interest in strengthening cooperation with the Sudan in the field of the development and protection of human rights, he pledged to improve capacity and training and to pay the necessary attention in this area.
He explained that his visit was to affirm solidarity with the Sudanese people in the light of the complex economic challenges, stating that the principles of human rights were a guiding principle for the achievement of freedom, peace and justice not only in the Sudan but throughout the world.
