The High Commissioner for Human Rights is visiting the Sudan for the first time.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, arrives in the Sudan on an official visit that is the first of its kind to any of the world’s countries since he took office as Human Rights Commissioner. The visit begins on November 13 and ends on November 16.
During the visit, the High Commissioner is scheduled to meet with the Chairman of the Transitional Sovereign Council, General Abdul Fatah al-Burhan, and a number of senior Sudanese officials. He will also meet with representatives of the National Commission on Human Rights and civil society organizations, including women’s and youth groups, as well as representatives of United Nations agencies and regional organizations.
He will also visit El Fasher in Northern Darfur and meet with officials of the territorial government and representatives of displaced persons and civil society organizations.
The High Commissioner, Mr. Türk, will conclude his visit by holding a press conference in Khartoum on Wednesday, November 16, at 1pm local time. The invitation will be limited to accredited journalists. A media invitation will be issued at the local level containing all details of the conference and instructions for its attendance.
