The National Human Rights Commission affirms the right to freedom of expression
The National Commission for Human Rights congratulated the Sudanese people on the occasions of the declaration of independence of the Sudan from within the Parliament in 1955 and the anniversary of the glorious December Revolution in 2018.
In a statement issued today, OHCHR stated that it is following up on calls for peaceful demonstrations in conjunction with this anniversary and stresses the following:
The right to freedom of expression and the right to peaceful assembly are rights respected and protected in the constitutional document and in the international and regional treaties that it has ratified.
The National Commission for Human Rights demands that the authorities respect and protect peaceful assemblies from all forms of violence and unlawful interventions and that all measures and actions taken thereon be under the supervision of the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
It also called on demonstrators to respect the law and commit themselves to peaceful expression.
