The President of the Sovereign Council meets with the High Commissioner for human Rights
General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, reaffirmed Sudan’s commitment to international covenants and covenants for the protection of human rights.
During his meeting with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mr. Volker Türk, in the presence of Foreign Minister Ambassador Ali Al-Sadiq and Director of the Human Rights Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Issam Metwally, pledged the Sudan’s full cooperation with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights Rights and the commitment of State institutions
During the meeting, he noted the Government’s efforts to return displaced persons and refugees from conflict zones to their areas.
Ambassador Issam Metwally said in a press statement following the meeting that the President of the Sovereign Council had confirmed commitment to the country’s democratic transition through the ongoing political process.
He reiterated his pledges for the military’s exit from the political process and the opportunity for political forces to form the transitional Government leading the country to free and fair elections.
The President of the Sovereign Council had welcomed the visit of the High Commissioner for Human Rights to the country and the assistance that UNHCR could provide to the Sudan to overcome some of the country’s current difficulties.
For his part, the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mr. Volker Türk, expressed his pleasure at visiting the Sudan, which he said was his initial official visit after assuming office, noting that it included, in addition to meeting with the President of the Sovereign Council, meetings with some ministers and representatives of civil society on the country’s human rights situation.
During the visit, he had visited El Fasher and had stopped the human rights situation in Darfur.
