Workshop on justice and reconciliation in the Juba Peace Agreement in El Geneina

UNMIS and UNDP, in collaboration with the Centre for Peace and Development Studies of the University of El Geneina and the Centre for Human Rights in El Geneina, organized a workshop on reconciliation and justice in the Juba Peace Agreement in Darfur, which brought together 30 participants from the community administration, civil society organizations, lawyers’ associations, resistance committees, and representatives of women, youth and displaced persons.

Addressing the opening session of the workshop, the representative of the UNITAMS mission, Mr. Mohamed Yusuf, stressed the importance of the role of civil society organizations, civil administrations and legal activists in promoting the concept of justice and reconciliation, which is included in the provisions of the Juba Peace Agreement, calling for joint action to eliminate all the effects of the war on Darfur. s role in supporting reconciliation across all its traditional mechanisms to enhance security and stability efforts.

emphasized the need for transitional justice and respect for diversity for peaceful coexistence.

For his part, the representative of the United Nations Development Programme in West Darfur (UNDP), Dr. Jeibullah Ahmed, commended the importance of the presence of the State Human Rights Centre in order to contribute to the support of peace efforts. human rights “, appealed to participants’ legal expertise and scientific experience to work jointly in support of this item to be fully implemented in order to safeguard human rights.

In addition, the Director of the University of El Geneina, Dr. Al-Tayeb Al-Zayn, called on participants to work hard to explain the concepts of the Juba Peace Agreement in Darfur to the components of society and to lay down its contents on the ground in order to promote peace efforts and the rule of law.

Stressing the adoption of the University of El Geneina on the basis of its social responsibility for such programmes to take advantage of the outputs in scientific research that contribute to finding sustainable solutions to all conflicts in the country.

During the workshop, he will discuss three working papers on mechanisms for achieving justice and reconciliation, the perspective of justice in the Juba Convention and national and criminal jurisdiction.
