Demonstrations in Juba protesting against price increases

Police in South Sudan say they have arrested a number of young protesters, who staged a protest in Juba over the cost of living in the country today.

Dozens of young people and university students in Juba held peaceful protests in Congo-Congo Market, denouncing the cost of living.

Youth also called on the Transitional Government to address youth unemployment.

Police spokesman Major General Daniel Justin told Tamazj Radio on Monday that police had arrested a number of young protesters during the Congo Congo Market demonstration.

He said: “These are opposition groups that have staged protests that have not yet confirmed the number of detainees.”

According to the police spokesman, the arrested youth will be investigated, and the police will decide either to release them with guarantee or not to release them.

“I can confirm that the youths arrested are with the police and I don’t know how many because they were arrested over the weekend, but I will confirm the number later.”

Radio Tamazaj was unable to contact the organizer of angry protests in Juba due to the cost of living.

The right to freedom of expression and assembly is one of the rights enshrined in the Transitional Constitution of Southern Sudan.

Article 24 provides that every citizen has the right to freedom of expression, receipt and dissemination of information and access to information.
