After Google’s decision.. Warning to all WhatsApp users
Google’s decision is set to affect all WhatsApp users, as users will be exposed from 2024, as messages and media on the app will be counted within Google’s 15 GB cloud storage limit.
According to GizChina, this sudden change in WhatsApp backup may not be obvious for many, especially with those who find themselves facing storage problems, due to space constraints.
Google says that “WhatsApp backups on Android will continue to work, as long as you have space available in your Google account storage space, and if you reach your storage limit, you will need to free up space to resume backups by removing items you don’t need.”
There are a number of ways to control the problem of Google’s 15 GB cloud storage, including:
Google One subscription
One of the most effective ways to address the storage crisis is to subscribe to Google One for a subscription of EUR 1.99 per month, and the basic Google One account provides 100GB of storage, which is more than enough to accommodate large backups. In addition to storage benefits, subscribers have access to Google’s VPN network, improved editing options for Google Photos, and additional backup space for the gallery.
Google Secondary Account
Creating a secondary account specifically for WhatsApp backups is a viable alternative. Creating a new account is a clear process, go to Android settings, access “accounts and passwords,” select “add an account,” and select “Google.”
Once the secondary account is set up, sync your WhatsApp app with it, ensuring your base account keeps 15GB of free space, and this method offers a practical solution without risking potential conflicts in your base account.
Optimize backups with minimal impact
Although you can’t transfer WhatsApp backups to other services that offer more space, you can make your backups more manageable, you’re advised to keep a Drive backup for data security, you can head to WhatsApp settings, access “storage and data,” and reduce the number of photos and videos stored in chats.
De-select items for automatic downloads via mobile, Wi-Fi and data roaming data, these steps not only save space on your device, but also make sure your Drive backup remains simple, alleviating potential storage issues in the future.
