Iran: The deal with Saudi Arabia will help end Yemen’s war
Iran’s mission to the United Nations said an agreement with Saudi Arabia to restore bilateral relations would contribute to a political settlement ending the war in Yemen, according to Iranian state media.
Iran and Saudi Arabia agreed Friday to restore diplomatic relations and reopen their embassies in both countries, after 7 years of tensions between the two countries, with Chinese mediation.
The IRNA news agency, citing a statement from Iran’s mission to the United Nations, said the agreement with Saudi Arabia would “accelerate efforts to renew the ceasefire agreement” and “contribute to the initiation of a national dialogue and the formation of an inclusive national government in Yemen.”
The ceasefire, the longest in the Yemen conflict, ended last October, but the two sides have stopped taking escalatory measures that could spark fighting.
