Tobacco smoking is gradually declining globally:
A new report by the World Health Organization shows that the number of adults from tobacco smokers worldwide has declined steadily in recent years.
The report addresses trends in the prevalence of smoking between 2000 and 2030, stating that in 2022 almost one in five of the world’s adults smoked or consumed tobacco derivatives, compared with one in three at the beginning of the third millennium.
150 countries that have succeeded in reducing tobacco consumption:
Data indicate that 150 countries have succeeded in reducing tobacco consumption in their territories, but despite low smoking rates in most countries, the organization warned that tobacco-related deaths are expected to remain high in the coming years.
The organization’s statistics also show that smoking kills more than 8 million people every year, including about 1.3 million non-smokers because of their exposure to passive smoking.
The report confirms that the interval between the implementation of strict tobacco control measures and the decrease in the number of smoking deaths is close to 30 years.
The number of smokers continues to decline
Although the number of smokers continues to decline, WHO estimates indicate that the target of reducing tobacco consumption by 30% between 2010 and 2025 is not achievable.
56 countries are expected to meet this target, including Brazil, which has already reduced its tobacco consumption by 35% since 2010.
Overall, however, the world is on track to reduce tobacco consumption by a quarter from 2010 to 2025, according to the report’s authors.
